Famous Film Directors who didn't go to film school

Author: Ian Agard

Here is an article that details five famous film directors who all have one thing in common they didn't spend a single day in film school. They learned and became a master at their craft from simple trial and error, self-study and unshakable self confidence and belief in themselves.

5. David Fincher
Fincher is an Academy Award-nominated American filmmaker and music video director known for his dark and stylish movies such as SevenFight ClubZodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Fincher eschewed the film school route, getting a job loading cameras and doing other hands-on work for John Korty's Korty Films. He was later hired by Industrial Light & Magic in 1980, where he worked on productions for Twice Upon a Time,Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Set on a directing career, Fincher joined video-production company Propaganda Films and started off directing music videos and commercials. Like Fincher, other directors such as Meiert Avis, David Kellogg, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, Neil LaBute, Spike Jonze, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, Paul Rachman, Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski, and Alex Proyas honed their talents at Propaganda Films before moving on to feature films

Oscar History: 1 Nomination

4. Peter Jackson
Mr. Jackson is a three-time Academy Award-winning New Zealand filmmaker, producer and screenwriter, best known for The Lord of the Rings trilogy adapted from the novel by J. R. R. Tolkien. He is also known for his 2005 remake of King Kong.
He won international attention early in his career with his "splatstick" horror comedies, before coming to mainstream prominence with Heavenly Creatures, for which he shared an Academy Award best screenplay nomination with his partner Fran Walsh
Jackson has no formal training in film-making, but learned about editing, special effects and makeup largely through his own trial and error. As a teenager Jackson discovered the work of author J. R. R. Tolkien after watching The Lord of the Rings (1978), an animated film by Ralph Bakshi that was a part-adaptation of Tolkien's fantasy trilogy. After leaving school Jackson began working as a photoengraver at a newspaper company in Wellington, and shooting a feature-length vampire movie that was later abandoned before completion.

Oscar History: 8 nominations, 3 wins.

3. Sir Ridley Scott
Scott is a British Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe, Emmy Award and BAFTA Award winning film director and producer known for his stylish visuals and an obsession for detail. His films include AlienBlade RunnerThelma & LouiseGladiatorBlack Hawk Down,Matchstick MenKingdom of HeavenAmerican Gangster and Body of Lies. At age 28, Scott made a black and white short film, ‘Boy and Bicycle, starring his younger brother, Tony Scott, and his father. The film's main visual elements would become features of Scott's later work. After directing over 2,500 TV commercials, Ridley finally made his feature directorial debut at age 40 making The Duellists. Can you believe that? 40 years old when he made his first feature film. If that is not inspiration for you, I don't know what is. You're never too old to become whoever you want to be.

Oscar History: 3 Nominations

2. James Cameron
Mr. I'm the king of the world is an Academy Award-winning Canadian-American director, producer and screenwriter. He has written and directed films as disparate as Aliens andTitanic. To date, his directorial efforts have grossed approximately US$1.1 billion domestically, unadjusted for inflation. Cameron is noted for his films¡Xwhich are often highly innovative, artistic and financially successful¡Xas well as his fierce temper and confrontational personality

Oscar History: 3 wins.

1. Steven Spielberg

Where should I start?
Steven Spielberg is an American film director, screenwriter and film producer. Forbesmagazine places Spielberg's net worth at $3.1 billion. In 2006, the magazine Premiere listed him as the most powerful and influential figure in the motion picture industry. Time listed him as one of the 100 Most Important People of the Century. At the end of the twentieth century,Life named him the most influential person of his generation. In a career of over four decades, Spielberg's films have touched on many themes and genres. Spielberg's early sci-fi and adventure films, sometimes centering on children, were seen as an archetype of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. In later years his movies began addressing such issues as the Holocaust, slavery, war and terrorism.

Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director for 1993's Schindler's List and 1998'sSaving Private Ryan. Three of Spielberg's films, Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993), broke box office records, each becoming the highest-grossing film made at the time. To date, unadjusted gross of all Spielberg directed films exceeds $8.5 billion worldwide.

Oscar History: 12 nominations, 3 wins.

Everything good that can be said about Spielberg has probably alright been said so the best compliment I can give this Hollywood icon is that I saw "Jaws¨ when I was five years old. Now I'm thirty-four and still get a little freaked out when swimming in the ocean, all because Spielberg made a timeless and classic shark thriller.

I hope this article leaves you with the belief that the most important characteristic needed to become a successful movie director is determination. Not schooling, not money, not being a child prodigy and not your contacts.

I would like to end this article with a quote from James Cameron.

"I think the most important thing if you're an aspiring film-maker is to get rid of the ‘aspiring'… You shoot it, you put your name on it, you're a film-maker. Everything after that, you're just negotiating your budget."

Star Wars And Psychology: Embracing The Dark Side

Author: Kyle Varner

A few evenings ago, some friends and I decided to watch the latest Star Wars film, Return of the Sith. This film got me thinking about a concept that is key to much of the hypnotherapy that I do, and is an excellent example of how not to lead one's life.

Much of what makes the Star Wars story so alluring is the puzzling change that occurs in Anakin Skywalker. How is it that a man can turn from supremely good to the embodiment of evil? We're led to love Anakin the Jedi and hate the same man, only a few days later. It is both puzzling and troubling. What is even more puzzling (and perhaps troubling) is that, on the surface, it seems that Anakin's love for Padmé is what leads him, ultimately, to the dark side.

This is an excellent example of the way the Jung claims that the human shadow works. The shadow, according to Jung, is a huge portion of our personality that we disown. We disavow it, and lock it away. Once it is locked away, it becomes destructive. We can see this in many ways: a person who denies something about themselves turns to self-destructive behaviors such as excessive drinking, or even worse, becomes violent. It is commonly accepted that many anti-social behaviors have their roots in a person's inner conflict.

Anakin's inner conflict is severe. He lives like a Jedi—which is, more or less, a monastic life. So many of the other Jedi do this very well—and Anakin fails. He fails the moment he starts to let his shadow express itself. What has been locked up for so long has grown vicious, and now consumes and destroys him. The image of Anakin locked into the hood of Darth Vader shows that he has really become consumed; he shadow has gotten loose; all that is good about him has been destroyed.

There is a lesson to be learned from this; and it's a lesson that goes back thousands of years. There are parts of us that we, or society, don't like. We have instincts, desires and urges that are, in some ways, unacceptable. It is only natural that we should try to repress them—by doing so we can be accepted by those around us. Unfortunately, when we oppress what we don't like about ourselves, it causes problems. It is the root of many neuroses and other problems in our lives.

The solution to this problem seems simple and is a monumental task: we must strive to make ourselves whole. That means, when we feel an urge to do something unacceptable, we must step back and examine that urge. We have to figure out what is at the root of that urge, and we have to integrate it into our lives in a positive way. We must understand that we are good—and that applies to everything about us. Something that has been shoved aside and allowed to become bitter and vicious is simply a natural part of us gone bad, and it is incumbent upon us to address that. In order to live good, healthy and happy lives, we have to embrace our dark side.

If Anakin Skywalker (and the Jedi) were to embrace the Dark Side in a healthy way, they would be more powerful than ever. They would feel emotions—love, anger, fear, and hate—and all of those emotions would be in proper perspective. Additionally, they would have access to the power that all of these emotions affords their adversaries, the Sith. Keeping the ill effects of some human emotions at bay does not help the Jedi at all; it just leads to dramatic outbursts of those same emotions. The lesson here is simple and very important: embrace your dark side in a healthy way, and you will be happier and more powerful.

Star Wars Lego Review Set 8091 Republic Swamp Speeder

Author: Inger Fountain

The Star Wars LEGO Swamp Speeder is part of the first wave of releases for Lego in 2010. This is a limited edition set which means you can only get it at Lego Shop At Home or specific stores (Target).

The set is a little small for the $29.99 price tag but that tends to happen with exclusive sets. There are 176 pieces and 5 minifigures so it is not a huge set. The Speeder itself is quite small and will be a deterrent for casual buyers. Collectors however will be attracted by the figure of Jedi Commander Barriss Offee as it is the first time she has been featured in a set.  This is a beautiful figure with purplish decoration on her face and a highly detailed torso.

Other figures in the set include a clone trooper, two battle droids and a super battle droid. The clone trooper is in what is regarded as phase two armor. That means it is not the original clone armor as featured in Episode 2 but the second version of the armor as featured in Episode Three. This armor is meant to serve as halfway between the original clone armor and that worn by the stormtroopers in episodes four five and six. For avid fans, this particular phase two clone Lego has a slightly newer design on its helmet and torso.

The speeder has a number of interesting features which may make up a little for the higher price bracket. As it is a swamp speeder wheels on the bottom of the model give the impression that the speeder is hovering across the surface. There are four flick fire missiles and there is a steering mechanism at the rear which controls the front wheels and missiles.

It's a great design and has a beautiful exclusive figure and if you can look past the high price point it is worth the purchase if you are a fan.

Lego Review 2010 Grand Emporium 10211

Author: Inger Fountain

The next instalment of the intricately detailed LEGO Modular Buildings has arrived with set 10211 Grand Emporium. The set follows on from other models in this series including Market Street, Cafe Corner, Green Grocer and Fire Brigade which all join together to create an amazing city street diorama.

The detail in these models is amazing and sets them apart from regular models, as does the average recommended building age. At 14+ these models are more in the league of adult collectors who enjoy the attention to detail and design and the intricate build.

This set is a model of a three storey department store and its sidewalk entrance area. There are escalators, mannequins in the window, revolving doors, clothing department complete with a cash register and fitting room, a glassware department on the second floor and a toy department on the top floor.  Outside window shoppers can send letters and buy an ice cream and gaze up at the window washer suspended from the top floor. A chandelier graces the ceiling inside while a billboard and skylight sit atop the roof.

The set has an amazing 2182 pieces which will give you an idea of how many small embellishments are in the model. Out of all the modular buildings Lego has made so far, this set has the most attention paid to the inside. It is almost as if Lego initially envisaged this series as being display-only models but then decided half way through to focus on the inside as well, to make them more interactive.  There are many small pieces which add a sense of character to the set and give it a sense of being part of a real "lived-in" Lego city.

The model comes with 7 mini figures which isn't a lot for a set this size, but as mentioned earlier the main focus of theses sets is the buildings. The Grand Emporium building measures 15" (38 cm) high and 10" (25 cm) wide and slots nicely alongside any of the other modular sets making an impressive interactive diorama.

Dealing With the New Us Travel Initiative

Author: Rajinder Dogra

The paramountcy of security considerations in air travel is, for Americans, something that has been non negotiable since terrorists slammed commercial aircraft into the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. If there were any likelihood of a lessening of intense feeling about air travel security, this was blown away by the recent plot unearthed in London against transatlantic flights to the USA.

This is the context in which we must view the decision last week by the US lawmakers to reaffirm the deadline for the coming into effect of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Under this measure, US citizens will be required to have passports in order to return home by air from trips to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. Having agreed to extend the previous deadline for its introduction from January 2006 to January 2007, US lawmakers were in no mood for a further extension.

But while insisting on the passport requirements for air travel beginning in January 2007, the lawmakers, apparently at the last minute, entertained lobbying efforts by the cruise-ship industry to postpone the application of the requirement to cruise travellers until June 2009. This is pretty much in line with the treatment accorded border crossings by land in respect of Mexico and Canada. Clearly, trans border crossings and ocean travel are viewed by the Americans as being of lesser ranking in terms of security risks than is air travel.

Notwithstanding the lobbying efforts that must be continued at the highest political levels for similar treatment to the cruise business, it is critical that the key stakeholders of the regional tourist industry intensify their campaigns in US markets to get travellers to acquire passports. The challenge that has been presented will, I am sure, open up opportunities for even more creative means to promote our destinations, and in the process, sensitise potential visitors about the new requirement. As of now, hoteliers, tourist boards, airlines, travel agents and tour operators have been running infomercials, but there needs to be a heightening of awareness as the deadline approaches.

The Caribbean has been benefiting from the fear of terrorism in certain parts of the world since 9/11, and is generally seen as a relatively safe area for travel. Consequently, visitor arrivals in this region have recovered quickly and we are now enjoying real growth. This is even truer for the cruise business, with the Caribbean becoming dominant in that business. Jamaica has done better than the average in the growth of stopover visitor arrivals, as well as in cruise passengers. For the current calendar year, we have indeed been experiencing accelerated growth rates in both areas.

While the cruise side of our business will be further enhanced by the extended grace period granted to it, there are justifiable fears among the hoteliers that this may be partly at the expense of land-based tourism. With a projected 1.2 million stopover visitors from the USA this year and on the basis of the current level of such visitors who travel on documents other than passports, there is substantial work to be done by Jamaica in particular, to mitigate the potential damage of the bias towards the cruise business. This work will not be made easy by any lethargy by American travellers towards acquiring passports.

The Movies of David Lynch

Author: Russell Shortt

David Lynch is something of an all-rounder - director, screenwriter, producer, painter, cartoonist, composer, video and performance artist. He started out as a painter, enrolling in the Pennsylvanian Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia when he was nineteen. Interestingly, one of is first works combined visual arts with cinema in his Six Figures Getting Sick (1966), where he projected a looped animation onto one of his sculptures. It was off the back of this that he secured funding to make his first two short films - The Alphabet (1968) and The Grandmother (1970). These two works met with great critical success. After which he moved to Los Angeles, spending the next six years making his first feature Eraserhead (1976). Eraserhead polarised and baffled critics but it went on to become a cult classic, after seeing the film Mel Brooks hired Lynch to direct The Elephant Man (1980) and George Lucas requested him to direct Return of the Jedi but Lynch declined the latter stating that it would become more his own vision than that of Lucas’. The Elephant Man, a biopic of the deformed Victorian era figure John Merrick, was a huge commercial and critical success, been nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. So the dark and unconventional independent director had astonishingly become the darling of Hollywood, would he be corrupted? Thwarted of his great vision? No fear, his second Hollywood feature would also be his last Hollywood feature. Dune (1984), an adaptation of the Frank Herbert cult science-fiction novel, was a commercial and critical disaster, though in fairness to Lynch he was denied the final cut and it was ultimately the studio’s film. And there was a silver lining, part of the deal Lynch made with producer Dino De Laurentiis when making Dune was that the producer would finance Lynch’s next feature.

Star Wars: The Franchise That May Never Disappear

Author: Andrew Wills

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was the little sci-fi movie that could "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope". At the time, though, it was just known as Star Wars, and it created a franchise unlike anything seen before.

In 2005, Forbes magazine estimated that the Star Wars franchise, from the time it began in the late seventies, had generated more than twenty billion dollars in revenue, and with six big screen success stories, at least three spin-off films, five licensed television shows, and thousands of books, comic books, and toys, it's no surprise. What might be a surprise, though, is that by the time Star Wars creator George Lucas finished the first film, he was over-budget, out of time, and convinced the film would be a flop. Early screenings of the film did little to improve Lucas' ideas that the film would be any kind of success, but when it was finally released in the summer of 1977, the film earned nearly seven million dollars in its first weekend. It is considered to be the second highest profitable film of all time.

More than Great Films

Ask any Star Wars fan, though, and they'll tell you it's not just about the movies, it's also about the associated merchandise. The initial film was predicted to be a flop, so no merchandise was created to debut with the film's release. The toy company, Kenner, though had purchased the license to sell associate products By Christmas of 1977, demand was so high, Kenner created an "Early Bird Special" kit. The kit held a certificate fans could send in for four 3 inch figures as soon as they became available. On Christmas morning, thousands of kids got empty cardboard envelopes that held only a display stand, a Star Wars club card, a few stickers, and a certificate they could put their name and address on, mail in, and wait for several months for the first Star Wars toys ever produced to arrive. Months later, lots of kids did get Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, R2-D2, and Chewbacca in the mail, and years later, these four figures are considered to be some of the most valuable action figures on the collectors' market today.

Explosive Industry Growth

As you can probably imagine, the Star Wars toy and merchandise franchise has grown considerably since the Christmas of 1977. Once Kenner geared up the production machine, it slowed for no one. From additional action figures to vehicles, playsets, and lightsabers, the vintage Star Wars toy market had everything. As Episodes V and VI were released, more toys hit the market. T-shirts, bed sheets, toothbrushes, combs, and watches were all part of the marketing campaign as well.

After the release of Return of the Jedi, though, the Star Wars marketing machine slowed considerably. People seemed to thing the Star Wars market was nearing the end. However, in the late 1990s, a new line of Star Wars action figures was released. Dubbed "The Power of the Force" line, these green carded figures created a whole new generation of collectors, and with the release of the special edition of the original trilogy, and the subsequent release of Star Wars Episode I, the marketing machine kicked back into high gear. From bubble bath to sandals, the Star Wars name can be found on almost anything these days, and with talk of additional television series, DVDs, and even other films, it's hard to tell when the franchise will ever slow down.
